Hello Kitty 35th Anniversary Opening Party at Royal/T

Last Thursday Sanrio threw a big birthday bash at Royal/T to celebrate Hello Kitty’s 35th Anniversary. A bunch of artists and designers were invited to participate in what Boingboing called a “booze-fueled celebrity bash” complete with Hello Kitty cocktails, h’ordeuvres, cupcakes, and wall to wall Hello Kitty displays. On top of that, it was Danielle and Daria’s birthdays, so the night couldn’t have been anymore perfect! Random celebrity sightings included Paris Hilton, Tarina Tarantino, Kimora Lee Simmons, Dave Navarro, Tera Patrick, and a ton of others I didn’t recognize because I’m not very media savvy. :-} We were intimidated by all the paparazzi at first (I was in the car screaming, “I DON’T WANNA GO IN!” while Sinh and Lauren comforted me, haha), but luckily as soon as we stepped out Lauren ran into her friends Gerard from My Chemical Romance and Lindsay from Mindless Self-Indulgence, so we went in with them. Warning! I went a little camera crazy, so this will be the colossal post of the century. I managed to edit 250 pictures down to 101, whoo!

L.A. Trip Part 2: Dean Karr show at Merry Karnowski Gallery, Bar Sinister, Veggie Grill mmmmm

When Kevin ran into his old friend Dean at the KMFDM afterparty, Dean asked us to stay in L.A. for an extra day to catch his show at the Merry Karnowski Gallery. Dean is a photographer and video director, most known for Marilyn Manson’s “Sweet Dreams” video, which I remember made me sooo horny in high school! Oh I guess he did The Distillers “Drain the Blood” video too. I didn’t know any of this when I met him. I asked him what he does, and he said “I take pretty pictures.” I said, “Are they cute?” He said, “Yes.” So I said, “Okay, I’ll come to your art show.” I was picturing the usual art shows we go to, with paintings of cutesy big-headed girls holding puppies and kittens. Whoops.

L.A. Trip Part 1: Angelspit & KMFDM at Club Nokia

The morning after Angelspit and KMFDM played San Francisco, we had to wake up early and follow them down to their next show in L.A. Kevin was asked to help out with a project down there. In a sleepy, disoriented daze, we got up and drove straight to the venue (Club Nokia) to help out and get ready backstage. I showed up to the club wearing my stinky driving clothes and no makeup, and it was only then that I realized I’d somehow forgotten to pack makeup, underwear, socks, and deodorant! All I had was the giant gray granny panties I had driven down in — which weren’t very conducive to the semi-sheer white dress I was about to change into — and a small handful of yesterday’s makeup in the bottom of my purse. Luckily my friends saved the day! Lumi brought me some clean non-granny undies, and Amelia generously gave me a bunch of stuff from her Miss X makeup line. Oh and on the way to the club, Lumi’s shoe snapped in half. Amelia came to the rescue with duct tape, which she used to tape the shoe back onto her foot. Man, were we a class act that night! I kept waiting for Amelia to screw something up too so that we’d be even, but she’s too damn perfect. ;-)

News Clip from Sanrio’s 35th Anniversary Party (aka “I’m socially awkward”)

I just got back from L.A. and am sooo exhausted! Too delirious from sleep deprivation to post a full report, but here’s a quickie video of me totally dorking out on the news last night. I was trying to hide in the background behind Twinkie Chan, but White Stephanie foiled my plans. I talk really fast when I’m nervous!

I will upload and post pictures from the Hello Kitty party this weekend. Time for sleep!

KMFDM & Angelspit at Regency Ballroom, San Francisco. I heart Amelia Arsenic!

On Thursday our pals from Angelspit and KMFDM were in town playing a show at the Regency Ballroom, so we went to go say hi.

“Hi!” Hanging out in supercute Amelia’s dressing room, comparing our makeup lines. I gave her a Sugarpill eyeshadow palette, and she gave me some of her Miss X eye dusts and gel liners. Her eyeshadows are all custom blended and soooo pigmented! Everyone should get her “Car Crash Red” eye shadow because it’s super amazing.

Zoeria Part 2: Berryessa Flea Market, Jade’s New Puppy, and Vague Project Updates

On Sunday Zoeria’s mom took us to the Berryessa Flea Market because sooooooomeone (not naming names, but the pregnant one!) was craving Churros. I didn’t really find anything good this time except for two Stella Artois goblets for 50 cents apiece — Score! We were surprised to see a mariachi band playing, so we stood on the sidelines and tried to take sneaky candid pictures of them. The band immediately busted us, stopped playing, and beckoned us to the front of the stage to be in the picture with them. We were super embarrassed and kept trying to run away, but the audience egged us on so we couldn’t say no. Everyone was cheering and congratulating Zoeria on her pregnancy. It was the sweetest thing ever!

Zoeria’s Having a Baby + More Embarrassing High School Photos!

I met Zoeria during our sophomore year of high school, and we immediately hit it off. For weeks I stalked her at her mall job and called her house every day until she would be my best friend. Anyone who has met Zoeria would agree that she’s one of the most selfless, nonjudgmental, 100% purely good people in the world. She has a heart of gold, not an enemy in the world or a mean bone in her body, and drops everything she is doing in order to help old ladies cross the street. These rare gems of people are nearly impossible to find these days (the other is my friend Danielle — I will have to dedicate an entire blog post to her someday!). In short, Zoeria is just an AMAZING person.

Zoeria’s only downside is that she doesn’t use the internet, doesn’t have texting, and still uses a neanderthal cell phone with a long antenna that she has to pull out whenever she makes a call. Needless to say, it became nearly impossible for us to keep in touch with her after she moved to Hawaii 9 years ago.

After not hearing from Zoeria for over a year, I received a super random phone call a few weeks ago. Through a fit of giggles, Zoeria fessed up that she’s six months pregnant and coming home to visit. AHHH!! How did we miss six of the most important months of her life?! We immediately got busy rallying up the troops, i.e. the high school best friends crew. Jen, check! Gee, check! Tina, check! Jade, check! Herby? Well, like I mentioned in my Pansy Division post, Herby hasn’t responded to any of our emails or phone calls in over three years. And I know he has a phone and the internet, so the reason for this remains a complete mystery.

On Wednesday, Zoeria, Jen, Gee and I (Tina and Jade were at work) met for lunch at Applebee’s in Milpitas, our hometown.
