L.A. trip, Gary Baseman, Fahrenheit, Cockroach Fun, Happy Hollow!

In March, we drove down to LA to visit friends for fun and good times.

Here’s one of me and Faith at the Silvia Ji/Joshua Petker art reception. Didn’t take any pictures, but I stole this one from vinylpulse.com (Free plug for them, don’t sue me)!

Afterwards, Lumi () invited us to a birthday party at Dr. Romanelli’s house in the Hollywood hills.

Faith, me Kevin, Lumi and Alice

Artist Gary Baseman. Wasn’t really familiar with his work, but he was quite a character!

Birthday boy Kyle

Cute monkey

Messy Stench and Buff Monster

Brain surgery movie being projected on the wall

Lumi’s boob says hello

I totally win at breakdancing

Some ho is taking forever in the bathroom. Oh wait, it’s Lumi! :-D

Smoking is bad for you, but I just had to post this cuz she looks so damn good.

The next day Kevin and I tried to go to the Mark Ryden reception, but it was so packed they wouldn’t let anymore people in. Boo! So we stood outside and took a picture of the window. :-(

We did make it to the Miss Van and Junko Mizuno reception. Junko paintings, in the flesh!! So cute!

It was also here that I bought my very first piece of art, woo hoo! I bought this signed and numbered Miss Van print. I SCORED #2 OUT OF 75!!!!! Whoa shit! (The weird lines are just glares on the glass)

*******************

The next weekend, Gary Baseman came up to SF for his reception at the Modernism. We stopped by to say hi. Hi!

Another picture I stole from vinylpulse.com, haha.

Gottfried Helnwein

The artist Kukula!!! (Jessica tried to duck and hide at first cuz she was wearing a Kukula shirt, haha)

Chillin at the Clift hotel. I didn’t realize my butt was sticking out so much until tourists started crowding around to take pictures and make dumb comments. :-( Fuck you, my butt rules!

*******************

One night Jen and I were bored and didn’t feel like going home. So we decided to be adventurous! “Let’s find a club that we normally make fun of, except this time let’s actually go inside!” We ended up at the super pretentious Fahrenheit, where all the Paris Hilton wannabes hang out. And you know what? It was really fun!! It was a slow night, so we ended up being the only girls in the entire club. Feeling quite bad-ass, we challenged the bouncer and some nerdy business guys to a few rounds of Checkers and Connect 4. Even with everyone helping me cheat, I still managed to lose every single round of checkers!

I love how hard the bouncer is concentrating. This is some serious business!

*******************

BABY’S FIRST COCKROACH! Maus showing off his fine catch. He pulled off three of its legs and kept dropping it at my feet. Ignoring the gross-out factor, I was BEAMING WITH PRIDE! Stand tall, my son. You, handsome and swift as a cheetah untamed, are the glory of felines everywhere. (Disclaimer: This is the first cockroach we’ve EVER found in our house, so don’t be afraid to come over now!!)

The stealth hunter guards his prey. (God he’s getting fat)

*******************

Here are some pictures of me having a bad hair, face, and mood day. I was mad at my sisters for something stupid. Kevin felt bad cuz I was crying, so he took me to Happy Hollow to feed the goats. Weeeee!!

I win the Puffy Face contest

Afterwards, we decided to adopt a cockroach. We felt sorry for him because all the cute and furry animals had a billion sponsors, but no one wanted the stupid cockroach. Hopefully this will cancel out the bad karma I got from laughing at the cockroach Maus killed. Check out this nifty certificate you get for $30! Kevin joked that we should have splurged for the $500 sponsorship level, which entitles you to “a personal encounter with your sponsored animal.”

*******************

Random leftover pictures…

Carrie’s new horse!!

And I ran into every single one of my ex-roommates all in one nite. Picture tiiiiime! We used to live in a house with maggots in the sink and mushrooms growing in the laundry room. Can’t say I miss it! (Love these people though!!)

Sylvia has been catching mice! I think she surprises herself everytime, but I am still pleased with her.

    • amy says:

Hey email me your new address. I bought something that made me think of you the other day, and I wanna send it to you!!! Don’t worry, it’s nothing bad haha.

  • I’m such a nerd that the idea of going to a club and drinking while playing board games totally sounds like a perfect night to me! Also, the print you purchased is beautiful.

And the crazy cat lady in me must point out that one of my favorite parts of a kitty is that extra roll of back fat some get when they lay on their sides.

  • platipuses says:

I wish I could take pictures with you! haha. you always have a lotta fun, it would just be cool.

My cat Chewy has been really into mosquitos lately, he takes the wings off and then gobbles them up, it totally grosses me out.

Your hair looks really cute in a pony tail.

I had a bunch of posts open in tabs and I clicked from one from ohnotheydidnt and then to yours and was really confused and thought your pictures had been posted there.

    • amy says:

Oh weird, I think that IS him! How random, haha.

The Miss Van print I think was $600 something. But it’s signed #2 out of 75, woo hoo!!!!

  • Cool Miss Van painting and I wished you got to see Mark Ryden’s exibit because I would have loved to see what he had.

    • amy says:

      Same here, we were super bummed! We waited in line for hours, and there were only 8 people in front of us when they finally closed up and said they weren’t letting anyone else in. Oh well! :-}

  • victoriae says:

We finally need to hang out and shoot together, hehe. I just started buying my first pieces of art as well.

  • Wow. Flipping be-you-tiffle photo of you there. (The first one.) Looks like you’re ‘doing something different’, though I can’t put my finger on it.

Oh, and there’s my crush, Jen. ;)

    • amy says:

Haha I think I just look different there cuz you’re not used to seeing me in a dress that goes all the way up to my neck. How unslutty of me!!!

  • nxdxgwen says:

Your Miss Van painting is gorgeous! I was also thinking about you the other day whe nthis evil mosquito was attacking me and I tried to kill it with Raid and it didnt die. It made me think of when you tried to flush the evil one in your house down the toilet after you were SURE it was dead and it rose from the dead with a vengeance! LOL. Hope you are well cutie!

    • amy says:

I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU REMEMBER THAT STORY, hahahahaa! That was so many years ago. Wow! That night will haunt me in my dreams forever. The evil reincarnating mosquito!!

      • nxdxgwen says:

LOL I cant believe I remember it either! I guess I was just reminded of it when the evil thing wouldnt die! Hope you dont have too many nightmares from the evil mosquito!

  • I love your Miss Van print! Hopefully once I’m done being a broke college student I can afford nice art, too.

  • jesuspwnsme says:

You look so happy when you’re with the goats!

The picture where the guy is playing connect four pretty much made my night.

I’m so jealous,, you know so many people, and you’re always out having a fun time! :]

  • how much were they going for? i love her stuff!!!

those goats are so cute, definatly a good way to cheer up!
if my cat ate/caught a cockroach i would die. he ate the head off a mouse once though. =P

    • agentlunacy says:

I’m wondering how much they are too. Google wasn’t much help.

Too bad you couldn’t get into the Mark Ryden reception! I want some prints for my apt. but holy cow, they’re expensive!
      You are so adorable!!

      • amy says:

Thanks babe! Long time no talk! :-)

Anyway, I don’t remember how much the Junko prints were, I just remember they were out of my pricee range, haha.

    • amy says:

I can’t remember how much they were, all I know was I couldn’t afford any hahaha!

  • yeh i wont be staying at your house, clearly u being asian has finally attracted the cockroaches to your home..

  • Gottfried Helnwein in real life!

  • My favorite part of Happy Hollow is the guinea pig island!

“Stand tall, my son. You, handsome and swift as a cheetah untamed, are the glory of felines everywhere.” < -- Hah, is this where your journalism degree comes in handy?

    PS
Your dress is super cute! It’s unlike anything I’ve seen you wear before.

  • frau says:

It was surprising to see some Finnish in your journal (lumivalkoinen = snow white) :)
That Miss Van painting is really gorgeous.

  • nicholar says:

They play checkers and connect four at Fahrenheit? That is hilarious…I always wondered what goes on in there, now I know thanks to you. Besides Fahrenheit, what do you recommend downtown…

  • horizonline says:

    1) I know some of that inebriated lot. :) (I like that Emine is still posing for the camera even though she’s buried and being crushed.)
    2) eek! Faith is quite a pretty young lady, isn’t she?
    3) Your butt may rule, but your checkers suck.
    4) Kevin and a ferret!
    5) I don’t want to tell you what to do, but why are you still wearing your backpack when you’re with a horse? Did you, like, justget there?

    yay pictures!
and… if you’re crying and need company you could just drive for over an hour and come cry up here! Easy! *cringe* I’m with Kevin, why didn’t you go for the $500 personal encounter?

  • definently fucking jealous you met messy

  • venus_hated says:

HAHA I forgot about those Fahrenheit pictures. Oh man…

    Happy Hollow rules.

  • xellegirlx says:

your print looks super cool! I love the paintings those girls do. Oh and I NEVER, ever understand ‘art’ movies they put up in galleries. The last one I saw had a naked asian woman in the mud amongst other things. I tried to get one of the arty people to explain it to me but I just got A Look and some waffle about the artists’ origins rather than an explanation as to why there was a lady being filmed naked in mud… I decided to interpret it as a celebration of the female body (as all nakedness is…?) the mud connecting it to mother nature?

ehh sorry I went on and babeled. It’s 1:30am here and I seem determined not to go to sleep even though I have to wake up early tomorrow sighhh

    • amy says:

Haha, no worries, I don’t get a lot of art either! For me, I just look for stuff that is “pretty” or “cute.” I don’t try to seek a deeper meaning or explanation. I remember one time I went to the SF MOMA and saw paper mache statues of people on all fours TAKING SHITS THAT WERE EIGHT FEET LONG. I’m not joking. I wish I could remember the artist’s name to prove I’m not making this up. And people were crowding around saying things like, “I think the artist is trying to evoke feelings of savagery and bring humans back to a beastly state. To make us feel one with nature again, without the confines of modern society.” Um, WHAT???? It’s a paper mache statue of someone taking an 8-foot-long shit!

      • xellegirlx says:

eeeww!!! Okay that’s kind of weird, I don’t know how people come up with this stuff!!

yeah I took art in High School and I had to interpret it sometimes but a lot of it was BS because my art teacher hated reading long pieces of writing so it didn’t really matter what I wrote really. A lot the artists I do like I like because I think their work looks lovely and looking at it makes me feel good/in awe!

  • Come hell or high water, I’m gonna get into Roman Dirge’s house someday.

  • o_strange says:

Mark Ryden and Kukula! Aww I’m so jealous!
Love your fun-filled and colourful photos, as always. I really want to visit and hang out with you lot, you seem like so much fun =)

  • mesasophia says:

    hahaha omg youre hillarious

  • mindlessdork says:

That dress is amazing! Who is it by/where is it from?
    You look stunning in it.

  • ariana6057 says:

heh. that’s funny about the cockroach.

and damn girl, i swear your b/f looks very similar to mine.
Although mine is a bit bigger, but still. :)

  • I guess I forgot to comment on here awhile back haha , but I love those cute paintings from Kukula, Miss Van, and Junko Mizuno!! I want one. Sigh.
