Raccoon/Possum/Cat Party

Ever since moving to Oakland, I hardly go out anymore. And why should I, when the party comes to ME?!

This is what a typical Saturday night looks like. Jealous?

Mr. Raccoon Man (right) and Mrs. Raccoon Lady (left) on a romantic date. I caught them humping on my back porch. With Michelle as my witness, I swear to god I am not making this up.

After they finished humping, they left and came back with Uncle Raccoon Man. Michelle calls him Gimpie because he’s shy and awkward. Anyway, here is Mr. Raccoon Man, Uncle Raccoon Man, and Mrs. Raccoon Lady (aka Stumpy). Yes, I can tell them apart. I wasn’t kidding when I said I don’t get out much!

After they finished cleaning out Rascal’s food bowl, they all split up and tried to bust every window and door in my house to get inside. It was actually pretty scary, cuz they are soooo smart with their creepy little hands! They know how to use doorknobs. My landlord said they used to sneak into the house thru the cat door and raid her kitchen in the middle of the night. Thank God I boarded up the cat door!

Ready to give up

Fuck you too, Mr. Raccoon Man!

Creepy hand

Oh don’t give me the face. I’m still not letting you in!

Unsuccessful, they crept around to the front of the house to try our bedroom window. Kevin didn’t get any sleep that night because they were clawing and tapping on the window by our bed nonstop! No matter how annoying they are, I can’t EVER get annoyed with them. Those little shits! :-)

And of course, it wouldn’t be a party without Mr. Possum Man!!

Or Joe, my neighbor’s kitten.

Tako guards the window to keep intruders at bay

Okay, I lie. I guess I’m not THAT much of a hermit. Michelle was in town so we decided to have a few drinks at the White Horse!

Michelle showing off her exquisite nail art. Kryolan was trying desperately to get rid of these awful nail art kits they had, and no one would take them. So they basically forced me to take a stack of them, despite my attempts to refuse. Everyone who saw them in my house laughed at me, except for Michelle, who said “WHOA, AWESOME! Can I have these?!” and proceeded to tear the box open and draw smiley faces and question marks on her nails. What an artist!

Funny notes on my fridge, including a very important message from Michelle regarding Gimpie.

  • OMG Raccons are so cute ** I’ve never seen a real one in my life, I’m jealous though they make problems, I guess?

  • Haha.. our last apartment was like that too since we were the only people within probably miles that had a little grassy backyard (we live in downtown Philly). My boyfriend and I couldn’t help encouraging them a little, either.. our little possum liked to eat sandwiches! Creepy hands or not, if you’re fuzzy and cute and you can pick a sandwich up, you win. ^_^

The last place I lived in in south philly had chickens in the backyard area (you know how they are there just a row of concrete slabs).

I learned to tune them out to sleep after a month but that first month was very obnoxious waking up to them at 5 am every day.

      • Chickens?! Oh man.. I grew up in the country and woke up to roosters crowing and cows mooing every morning. If I had to deal with that in the middle of the city I think I’d go crazy. Unfortunately, the apartment next door to us was under constant construction the entire time we lived there, so I went pretty crazy waking up every morning to people yelling in Spanish and breaking shit. But I suppose that’s the flavor of Philly!

There was a couple over 20 then…animal control came after I moved and took aboud a dozen but never came back for the rest. My good friend still lives there and whenever I crash there and wake up to those chickens I always wake him up to tell him how much I hate them.

Now I’m at 6th and snyderiish area….I almost miss the chickens hahahah I think I live on one of the loudest corners in the city…but like you said…that’s living in philly.

Damn raccoons are so cute! What is Oakland like to live in? I live in Ireland, have done all my life but I have been offered a place on a scholarship programme next year and one of the colleges is St Mary’s in Moraga which is tiiiny but I think near Oakland? I want to go there because it’s close to San Francisco which is one of my favorite cities in the world.

    • oddlet says:

If they are keeping you up at night, you can build a simple ‘trap’ that keeps them busy by getting a heavy box that they can’t drag away (or weight it down with something) and making a small hole in it just big enough to stick their hands in. Put something shiny in it like bits of tin foil or old keys. They will reach in to grab the shiny thing and then will not let go. If you make the hole the right size, they won’t be able to pull their fist out and then will sit there all night because they refuse to let go of the shiny thing. It doesn’t hurt them at all and if they’re so persistent that they stay even after the sun comes up, you can then call animal control.

    • oddlet says:

oops, sorry i didn’t mean to post as a reply to your comment.

  • dangerrrdoll says:

HAHAH gimpy has a major gimpwalk. he must have been injured in the catfood wars of 2008.

BE IN AWE OF MY NAIL ARTZ!

dude the neighbors cat is hecka cute!

  • taissalada says:

oh god, we get those critters too. A few years ago 24 of them decided to move in to my mothers attack and tear the place apart. They chewed up wires, crapped everywhere and had a family.

eventually an exterminator was called and they were taken away. Oh and we had a wood chuck too.

I used to have a possum, a white one come to the deck and hiss at me through the sliding door. It creaped the hell out of me and to make matters worse crapped on the deck which of course I managed to step in in my prada high heels.

Coons HATE the smell of bleach. They won’t go near it. Take some old rags and put them on bowls outside. That should keep them away.

  • bubblesung says:

aww Uncle is hella cute! but omg there is crazy scary how they try to get in…they’re all communicating to one another…one day….the party is gonna move INSIDE your place…your cat’s gonna be like PARTAY OVER HEAAAAAA!!

  • horizonline says:

Hm. Is she the girl whose dress strap I broke? er … um. I know how that sounds, but … anyway, did you tell her I was sorry?

    • amy says:

Haha, yes! That be Michelle. She was with me when I read your text the next day, and she said it’s cool. She had fun and thought it was funny. :-)

      Let’s plan another playdate!!!

      • horizonline says:

Yay! … like what? I have plenty of time off. .. like days and days. :)

I’m glad she thought it was funny. .. It was a little awkward.. OOOK BYE NICE TO ME Y- *snap* … oh fuck. :) well, good.

        Yes. more fun. NOW!

  • LMAO! Hey man, an evening of watching raccoon antics is far more exciting to me than drinking.

  • satinworship says:

One time a chicken ended up in my back yard. I tried to catch it, but this was before we had a fence so he escaped my loving grasp. And then he got into my neighbors yard and they had puppies and…well, it was not a happy ending for the chicken.

  • djsin says:

cute pictures! You should marco them and add witty sayings :)

  • Am I the only one who doesn’t find them cute ?
They remind me of Gremlins with their little creepy fingers !
    dfksjfhdkfhsdkfh

however , this post made me giggle A LOT. So props .
ALSO – joe and tako are WAY TOO CUTE TO BE ALLOWED .

  • OMG! raccoons are the cutest, and so are the kitties. we’ve actually had raccoons visit our back patio in philly looking for food. they’re sneaky! my friend, who lives on the other side of south philly, used to have wild chickens who would hang out in his back patio. no joke! these crazy animals are everywhere.

  • rabies….

    LMFAO!! That is awesome..

I used to feed a outside cat like this and living in BFE I would get the same critters. Till I lurned that its extremely un heathy to let a cat eat from the same food boll as raccoons and possums. They can get rabbis and other critter disease from it.

  • omfgggggg that is tooooo adorable <3

  • misswayward says:

There’s no way I could get mad at a racoon. And I think they might know it…

  • xninjax says:

oh my god i want to live in your house. it’s like a zoo!!! you should charge admission.

  • enjerumuffin says:

that was hilarious and cute haha
i sometimes wish we had raccoons in brooklyn

  • romann says:

Yes, these animals are cute, but your icon brought back memories!!

    “I love to sing-a!
“About the moon-a and the June-a and the Spring-a…”

Now I gotta go find this on YouTube.

    • amy says:

AHHHH yes!! No matter how many times I watch it, I still squeal with delight at his little song and dance. My favorite is the scene where his family walks in on him performing at the talent show, so he switches over to that horrible nasally voice. SOOOOO CUTE!!!

  • glowkitty says:

Aww how cute! But still a little scary. I wouldn’t want them in my house!

  • girlaxia says:

whoa it’s a regular party at your place!

  • susieqz says:

I had a possum in my yard for a couple of nights. He kept trying to get into my grill, but I think he finally gave up because I haven’t seen him in a long time. I don’t know where he came from because I live in Miami, and in an area without any parks or anything around.

  • coolsockbeth says:

i am so jealous! raccoons are the cutest!

  • ekanderson says:

Man. We were feeding cats on our porch for a while and it wasn’t long before we had a possum & raccoon following, too. One possum was always coming up to the back door and staring in all I AM A CAT, PLEASE BE FEEDING ME NOW.

Raccoons can be vicious though – don’t let them eat your kitties!

  • man you party like I do. I have a family of 6 raccoons that are always hanging out in my yard, even occasionally during daylight hours. at night they like to hang out on the roof of my house and throw pinecones at eachother. I have a few baby possums too that always hang out by the ashtray we keep outside, so I’m assuming they are smokers.

  • moonbunny42 says:

this post is full of cute. and tako looks just like one of our kitties. so adorable.

  • kittysuck says:

AHhh raccoons are cute but look creepy!

I cna’t believe so many little animals came round to your house :D You’re cats are so beautiful interacting with them!

And your possums look SO WEIRD compared to our possums in Australia.

We used ot have a possum I named Baby who would come into the kitchen at night and eat the cat’s food. He wasn’t scared of us or the cats and would just walk in bold as brass!

Then one day I found him dead in the backyard :(

  • twinkiechan says:

As I was quickly scrolling through my friends page, I saw the raccoons and knew it was your journal. Ahahahahaa.

Ok the raccoons are cute but THE POSSUM IS TERRIFYING.

  • whatsoever says:

LOL @ the vietnamese on the fridge :D

  • fiendette138 says:

Those raccoons are so cute!!!!!! I love the shots of your cat looking at him, I can tell hes a good guard ;)

  • I think the “F YOU TOO MR RACCOON MAN” picture is my favorite, because that raccoon is totally sticking his tongue out at y’all. And your cat is like, “Yeah, WHAT?”

  • peacelovr says:

where the hell do you live? the great outdoors? lol.

they do have creepy little hands. but they’re adorable!!!

  • synica66 says:

They’re gunna rob you blind one of these days, you’ll come home to all your pricey electronics gone.

P.S. I used to feed skunks. I’d throw eggs out of the bathroom window and I’d have a lil skunk party going on out in the yard. It pissed off my BF due to the smell issue if any of them happened to spray, which never ever happened.

  • dinafragola says:

Cute-o-rama …thanks for the dose of fluffiness

  • mwichman says:

I would have been so scared with all the wild animals running around the house.

    you’re one brave girl ha

  • ash_chan6 says:

So cute though I would have been terrified.
    Your cats are gorgeous

  • love_jonny says:

oh fun, i’m so happy i found you on here!
i’ve loved your dresses and stuff on eBay for the longest.
    xo, jonny
